1. Allow yourself more time than you think you need to be able to pack.  Do not leave it for the last day.  It ALWAYS takes longer than you imagine.  Do not forget that while packing, you will decide what to take, clean some of the items, wrap some in bubble wrap, figure out what box to put them in, and how to secure them against the other items.  Furthermore, people find that there is more to pack than they realized from just looking around the house or apartment.
2. Do not over pack boxes.  It is better to use more boxes and pack so that your things are compact and secure, but not enduring excessive pressure from the other contents.

3. Use small boxes (perhaps reinforced thick cardboard) for heavy items such as books, papers and plates, and for fragile items such as figurines and glassware.

4. Use large boxes or wardrobe boxes for clothes.  Include any light, flexible items in these boxes.
5.  A good guide to packing: pack so that an average build person, man or woman can carry every box.
6.  Use bubble wrap and newspaper to protect any item you know or suspect to be fragile.  It is better to wrap more items for protection that risk damage to items you think might be ok for the short time they are packed.  Caution: newspaper can irreversibly mark some items, especially items that are cloth such as lampshades.
7. Tape bottle tops containing liquids, and place them standing up in the box.
8. All glassware, plates, and breakable objects should be wrapped so that they do not bounce against one another in the box.  Line the box with newspaper shredding on the bottom, sides, and the top. Secure items so that they do not move.  Place plates and glasses so that they are standing and so individual items at the bottom of the box are not enduring all the weight of a set of plates, etc.

9. Tape every side or seam of the box to reinforce it.  More tape = more secure.  Tape the bottom of the box with tape that crosses the length and width of the box.  After the box in full, it is advisable to add some newspaper shredding to cushion the top and then tape the top in the same way you did the bottom.  Guard your box again falling apart when it is lifted and moved.  The more heavier the box, the more important the proper taping of it.

10.  Mark every box with its destination in your new house.  Summarize the contents of the box as well.  For example: Living Room, lamp and large figurines.  And, if there are fragile items in the box, place a fragile sticker on the top and side of the box or write very large: FRAGILE!

11. Wrap glass frames, mirrors or large paintings in blankets and rope.
